Here is a small preview of today’s interview with Ryan. The transcript below has been lightly edited for length and clarity:

Tracey Velt: Obviously, you have a massive team, and a lot of team leaders really struggle with the different phases of building a team. And I’m sure that you are no different. It takes a lot of adjustment and pivoting to build a team your size. So what were the three most pivotal moments in scaling your growth?

Ryan O’Neill: I would say that that first moment is was making the decision to go all in on the agents, on our team and stop selling. It wasn’t so much a financial decision. I’ve never really been one that looks at it financially and says, “Ok, what’s better, which is going to be more money or that type of thing?” For me, it was more about what do I enjoy doing? Where can I bring the most value to others?

The second moment, is the realization that you have to provide meaningful value for agents. And I think that meaningful value can mean a number of different things. It could be, in regards to commission splits, in regards to training, in regards to support.

But there has to be something there, there has to really be something there. That moment is that when you do your best to take care of your existing agents, when you do your absolute best to provide that meaningful value, through training, care, lead generation — through all of the benefits that agents can experience, they’re naturally, going to want to refer you to friends and family and other people in the industry.

A lot of our growth has been organic where I am not a hardcore recruiter, I don’t call up all the other brokerages and say, hey, we’re the best. And you need to come work with us. It’s been more of an organic growth, really a referral based growth here in the Twin Cities.
