The RealTrends Gathering of Eagles ramps up today with record crowds. Brokerage leaders showed up en masse to see old friends, network and, finally, attend an in-person event, held at the historic Broadmoor resort in Colorado Springs. Later today, attendees will enjoy a round of golf during RealTrends’ charity golf event.
Organizational expert Patrick Lencioni, author of “The Five Dysfunctions of a Team,” and other books, kicks off the 2021 Gathering of Eagles to talk to leaders about the health of their organizations.
Lencioni’s’ book, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, is where I think it all starts. Here they are in summarized version.
Absence of Trust. The fear of being vulnerable with team members prevents the building of TRUST within the team.
Fear of Conflict. The desire to preserve ARTIFICIAL HARMONY stifles the occurrence of productive, ideological conflict.
Lack of Commitment. The lack of CLARITY or BUY-IN prevents team members from making decisions to which they will stick.
Avoidance of Accountability. The need to avoid interpersonal discomfort prevents team members from holding one another ACCOUNTABLE for their behavior and performance.
Inattention to results. The pursuit of individual goals and personal status ERODES the focus on collective success.
These five points serve as the backbone of every organization. In Lencioni’s keynote at GOE, he’ll discuss the difference between successful companies and mediocre ones. Spoiler alert: It has little to do with what they know and how smart they are and more to do with how healthy they are. In his book, “The Advantage,” Lencioni explores the advantage organizational health provides.
