The survey from St. Louis-based Clever Real Estate found that 45 percent of home sellers didn\u2019t know they were expected to pay the buyer\u2019s agent commission. Only 35 percent knew what the standard commission fee is as determined by their home\u2019s final sale price.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div class=\"infogram-embed\" data-id=\"3ab77a13-2eff-4b3c-9a58-fad33852b8ee\" data-type=\"interactive\" data-title=\"Q4: In most real estate transactions, who pays the buyer&amp;#39;s agent commission fee?\"><\/div>\n<p><script>!function(e,t,s,i){var n=\"InfogramEmbeds\",o=e.getElementsByTagName(\"script\")[0],d=\/^http:\/.test(e.location)?\"http:\":\"https:\";if(\/^\/{2}\/.test(i)&&(i=d+i),window[n]&&window[n].initialized)window[n].process&&window[n].process();else if(!e.getElementById(s)){var r=e.createElement(\"script\");r.async=1,r.id=s,r.src=i,o.parentNode.insertBefore(r,o)}}(document,0,\"infogram-async\",\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed-loader-min.js\");<\/script><\/p>\n<p>The findings echo concerns voiced earlier in the year by the<a href=\"https:\/\/consumerfed.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/the-agency-mess-home-buyer-and-seller-confusion-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Consumer Federation of America<\/a>, which called for improvement of disclosure laws, and an outright ban of dual agency.<\/p>\n<p>Tom O&#8217;Shaughnessy, author of the report from Clever Real Estate, said the poll showed&nbsp; 37 percent of home sellers would consider a dual agency, and 46 percent were unsure. These types of arrangements are controversial, as <a href=\"agency-mess-consumer-group-calls-improvement-disclosure-laws\/\">dual agents have no clear fiduciary responsibility<\/a> to either party involved in the sale.<\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;Shaughnessy said that despite widespread industry disruption, real estate professionals still have a crucial role to play in the home-selling process \u2014 and it\u2019s unlikely that demand for their services is going to go away anytime soon. Most home sellers \u2014 even those trying to sell for sale by owner (FSBO) \u2014 still need a real estate agent. About 50 percent of respondents said they wouldn\u2019t feel comfortable negotiating with buyers, and about 62 percent wouldn\u2019t feel comfortable finding and completing the necessary paperwork for closing.<\/p>\n<p>Clever&#8217;s poll found that many home sellers are on the fence about using a real estate agent, said O&#8217;Shaughnessy: 32 percent were unsure if they\u2019d end up using an agent, and 14.5 percent said they were planning to try to sell FSBO.<\/p>\n<p>The key takeaway is that many homeowners simply don\u2019t understand all of the costs involved in selling a home. Real estate agents should set realistic expectations at the outset in order to avoid nasty surprises and difficult conversations further down the line. This is especially true for first time home sellers, who were 53 percent more likely to believe home buyers pay commissions than experienced home sellers.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cMany home sellers don\u2019t understand commission fees,&#8221; said&nbsp;Chris Doss, an Atlanta-based Keller Williams agent. &#8220;Closing costs are important, and many sellers don\u2019t realize the true costs until I\u2019ve met them and gone over their net price. It\u2019s been so long since they bought their first home, and they forget (or maybe never knew) sellers pay commission fees.
