As such, a solid understanding of search engine optimization is essential. A cornerstone of that understanding is keywords. Nail that down, and everything else should follow naturally.&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you have a solid understanding of search engine optimization?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your answer was anything other than \u201cyes,\u2019\u201d then I have some bad news for you. You are very likely behind your competition in that regard. Knowledge of SEO \u2014 of how to optimize your website for both search and usability &#8211; is at the core of being a successful realtor in 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that you\u2019ve already got the expertise necessary for the most important part of SEO &#8211; keywords. As a realtor, you\u2019re no stranger to trawling through search engines and directories for the perfect listing, or to writing a good listing yourself. Those skills are directly applicable to search engine marketing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, there are a few things you should keep in mind where keywords are concerned &#8211; here are a few you should target, and a few you should stay away from.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local and Hyperlocal<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a realtor, you generally want your keywords to be as specific as possible. You want to connect your services not just with a specific city, but specific <\/span><a href=\"carving-real-estate-niche-neighborhood\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neighborhoods <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in that city. For instance, rather than targeting \u201chouses for sale in Orlando,\u201d or \u201cbuy a house in Orlando\u201d you could consider targeting \u201chouses for sale in Rose Isle Orlando\u201d or \u201cbuy a house in Rowena Gardens Orlando.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focus on markets and neighborhoods in which you have some level of expertise. These could be places where you\u2019ve sold properties in the past, or that you know a great deal about through colleagues. By doing this, you\u2019ll not only attract more people with purchase intent, but you\u2019ll also bring in clients who are interested in your <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">specific <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">markets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the same vein as the above, you\u2019ll want to avoid anything that\u2019s too generic or casts too wide a net. Again, if you\u2019re planning to target keywords like \u2018real estate\u2019 or \u2018realtor,\u2019 add <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">qualifiers. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northeast Orlando real estate agency<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rather than simply <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">real estate agency<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Florida real estate agency.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That actually leads in nicely to our next point.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-Tail<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google wants to be all about context and intent. It hasn\u2019t been shy nor secretive about that fact. Every algorithm update over the past several years has been made to help its search engine return results based not just on what a user typed, but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what they<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">want to find.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s something you need to consider with your SEO efforts as well. And it\u2019s also why short-tail keywords &#8211; single words, basically &#8211; aren\u2019t necessarily worth your time. Not only are they competitive enough that you probably won\u2019t rank for them, but they also <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lack context.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focus on long-tail keywords. On what your audience <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is looking for<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For example\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orlando House <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a short-tail keyword. It doesn\u2019t give us any context. Is the searcher looking for a photo of a house? To rent a house? For renovations?&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buy a house in Orlando <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a long-tail keyword. While it\u2019s still not quite as localized as we\u2019d like, it gives us a lot more information. We know there\u2019s purchase intent behind the search.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Best Orlando neighborhoods in which to buy a house in 2019 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is even better. It tells us exactly what the searcher is looking for, and the timeframe in which they\u2019ll make a purchase decision.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, there\u2019s one word of advice I\u2019ll add &#8211; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">don\u2019t try to target a keyword or keyphrase if you cannot do so with natural language. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The copy on your website should first and foremost be written for your users. If you\u2019re sacrificing readability just to stuff more keywords in, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you\u2019re doing SEO wrong, and Google will penalize you for it.&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Informational&nbsp;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus far, we\u2019ve mostly talked about keywords related to real estate <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">purchases. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keywords that target users who are either looking to buy right away or are researching a possible purchase in the immediate future. There\u2019s another keyword group that you should target, however &#8211; informational.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a realtor, people are coming to you for your expertise. Maybe they don\u2019t know the market in their city, or they don\u2019t know what\u2019s involved in buying or selling a house. Maybe they trust you to find better deals than they could on their own time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever the reason, they look at you as a thought leader of sorts. Informational content and the keywords associated with it emphasizes that leadership. Yes, I\u2019m telling you that you should have a blog. Most business owners should these days, regardless of their industry.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topics you might write on could include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Things to keep in mind when purchasing your first house<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to effectively host an open house<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Renovating a newly-purchased home<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unexpected expenses associated with condo ownership<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You get the idea. If it\u2019s something that would be of interest to someone buying or selling a home, you can write on it. Just be careful you don\u2019t go <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">too <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">far afield.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, it could be useful to write about red flags to look out for during an open house. You probably <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shouldn\u2019t <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">write about the ideal color palette for a new home.
