{"id":2802,"date":"2022-01-28T18:10:48","date_gmt":"2022-01-28T18:10:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.realtrends.com\/blog\/2022\/01\/28\/interest-in-relocation-rises-to-near-pandemic-high\/"},"modified":"2025-03-13T02:40:04","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T02:40:04","slug":"interest-in-relocation-rises-to-near-pandemic-high","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.realtrends.com\/blog\/2022\/01\/28\/interest-in-relocation-rises-to-near-pandemic-high\/","title":{"rendered":"Interest in relocation rises to near pandemic high\ufffc"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As cases of COVID-19 began to rise during the fourth quarter of 2021 due to the spread of the highly contagious omicron variant, prospective homebuyers again ramped up their searches to relocate from their hometown, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/Q4-2021-housing-migration-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a> from <strong>Redfin<\/strong> released on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report found that 31.2% of Redfin.com users looked to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realtrends.com\/blog\/interest-in-relocation-cooling-but-still-above-pre-pandemic-levels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">move away<\/a> from their current metropolitan area during the fourth quarter of 2021, just 0.3 percentage points below the all-time high of 31.5% set during the first quarter of last year. Prior to the onset of the pandemic, a high of 26.3% was recorded in the fourth quarter of 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Redfin\u2019s migration analysis is based on a sample of about 2 million <a href=\"http:\/\/Redfin.com\">Redfin.com <\/a>users who search for homes across 111 metro areas in the fourth quarter. To be included in the data set, a user must have viewed at least 10 homes in a particular metro area and homes in that area must have made up at least 80% of the user\u2019s searches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interest in relocation has been on the rise since the start of the pandemic, with experts citing historically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.housingwire.com\/articles\/mortgage-rates-fall-slowly-after-a-month-long-rise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">low mortgage rates<\/a> and the surge in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-09-29\/remote-work-projections-are-on-the-rise-in-u-s-managers-survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">remote work<\/a> flexibility as the primary reasons why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most popular destinations based on net inflow, or the number of Redfin.com home searchers looking to move into a metro as compared to the number looking to leave, were Miami, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Sacramento and Tampa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen a huge amount of people coming from the Bay Area, some to live permanently and some looking for investment properties,\u201d Alison Williams, a Redfin agent in Sacramento, said in a statement. \u201cBuyers are trying to get their hands on a home before interest rates go up even more. Remote workers coming from the Bay Area all have the same dream: To find a bigger home for half as much, and with a much more comfortable lifestyle and more money in their pockets.
