But they also present issues that non-family entities don\u2019t have to work through. For <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kw.com\/kw\/GetAgent.action?personId=21038\">Greg Johnston of Keller Williams Realty East Idaho<\/a> and one of the franchises\u2019 top-selling agents, working with his older brother Mike Johnson (office broker who doesn\u2019t list or sell) and their father, Jim Johnston, has proven to be a magical combination.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cPeople often say to me, \u2018Greg, I\u2019m surprised that you can work with family, because a lot of people can\u2019t do that,\u2019\u201d says Johnston, who has been working with his father for the last 19 years. \u201cBut we\u2019ve found a formula which works in an industry where not all family teams get along, and where some just wind up going out on their own.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s how they do it:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;1.&nbsp; They check their egos at the door.<\/strong> Being selfish or self-centered doesn\u2019t cut it in a family business, where everyone has to pull their weight and be \u201cin it\u201d for the right reasons. This is particularly important in real estate, where all members of the family tend to have the same sphere of influence to pull from. \u201cWe\u2019re working together, so it\u2019s not about any one person,\u201d says Johnston. \u201cWhen one of us wins, we all win.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.&nbsp; They collaborate <u>a lot.<\/u><\/strong> Open lines of communication are critical in a family business, where close relationships between team members can be both a blessing and a curse. The Johnstons regularly bounce ideas off one another (\u201cHey, who are you meeting with this afternoon?\u201d and \u201cWho\u2019s covering the office this morning?\u201d) and coordinate their activities in a way that benefits everyone. \u201cGood communication really goes far in the team environment,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-47217 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realtrends.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/01\/Jim-and-Greg-Johnston.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4019\" height=\"3215\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>3.&nbsp; They sell themselves as a \u201cpackage\u201d deal.<\/strong> In today\u2019s real estate market, consumers like instant responses from people who know their stuff.
