After outdoing herself in 2017 by selling about $165 million in properties\u2014much of which was buoyed by getting involved with marquis properties like 1 Upper Road, the most expensive sale in Ross, Ca., for 2017\u2014McLaughlin is on track to either repeat or even exceed that number this year.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-47618 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realtrends.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-27-at-3_47_40-PM-189x300-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"189\" height=\"300\"><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A Realtor with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.googleadservices.com\/pagead\/aclk?sa=L&amp;ai=DChcSEwilhqfe7fTbAhXIwMAKHYj8AAoYABAAGgJpbQ&amp;ohost=www.google.com&amp;cid=CAESQeD2lYab4xBD8qrpT8tOrWvgM5TaldvU3Ypa0vgULfAN6sDonAANKbS06Zp7vxhMMeVbbhYoWY7aV86OEoaaymlp&amp;sig=AOD64_0um1N_jF9CHsUqqNxjVj8djYqEhQ&amp;q=&amp;ved=0ahUKEwi_oKHe7fTbAhVkxYMKHVoIALEQ0QwIJw&amp;adurl=\">Pacific Union Real Estate<\/a>, McLaughlin was ranked #39 and #70 for Individual By Sales Volume in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realtrends.com\/blog\/rankings\/rt1000\/\">Real Trends The Thousand<\/a> for 2016 and 2017, respectively. Here\u2019s how she manages to sustain her success over the long term:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Be willing to make a bed or sweep a floor.<\/strong> Even high-end homes require a little elbow grease before they can be shown, and McLaughlin says she\u2019s never wavered her commitment to <strong>\u201cdo what has to be done\u201d<\/strong> to get top dollar for her clients\u2019 homes. \u201cIf you think that just because you&#8217;re doing $100+ million a year in sales that you are too big to sit at someone&#8217;s open house or even make a bed, you need to remember that you are in a service business and you are servicing people for what they need when they need it before that house closes,\u201d says McLaughlin, who still does Sunday open houses on her listings. \u201cNo job is too menial.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Open those lines of communication\u2026and then keep them open. <\/strong>Having previously worked for eight years as a reporter\/anchor for various NBC affiliates around the country, McLaughlin credits her background in journalism and communications as an integral part of her ability to effectively present properties and negotiate transactions. \u201cHone your listening and interviewing skills and actually <em>pay attention<\/em> to your clients\u2019 wants and needs,\u201d she advises. \u201cThen, use that knowledge to walk into the space and visualize what needs to happen in order to get it sold for the highest possible price.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-47620 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realtrends.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/01\/AdobeStock_139521432-1-1024x691-1.jpeg\" alt=\"thrive and survive\" width=\"1024\" height=\"691\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Put the clients\u2019 needs first and the sale will come. <\/strong>Real estate is a relationship business, and nowhere is that more obvious than in San Francisco\u2019s luxury home arena. \u201cEven if you lose the business, being honest with people and telling them the truth about their homes, what those properties are really worth, and what they need to do to sell them,\u201d she says, \u201cis way better in the long run for building a sustained business than just trying to sell another house.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A big believer in branding, McLaughlin reminds agents that there are thousands of agents in the U.S. and that many of them slog along doing the same sales volume year after year.
