Oregon Gov. Kate Brown has signed legislation that creates a new statewide rent control law, the first of its kind in the nation. The law, which caps annual rent increases<\/a> to 7 percent plus inflation throughout the state, will go into effect immediately. The rent increase restrictions exempt new construction for 15 years, and landlords may raise rent without any cap if renters leave of their own accord. Subsidized rent also is exempt.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n While Brown said lawmakers and the Oregon Housing and Community Services Department should report back on how the bill is working during the 2021 legislative session, some are already voicing their objections to the law.<\/p>\n Every Oregonian should have access to housing choices that allow them and their families to thrive.
